Website Evaluation Reflection

This website evaluation was an eye opening experience for me.  As an Internet user, I've been aware of websites I've like and ones that aren't as good, but I never really considered what all goes into making a good website good.  After scrolling through the list of reccommended sites, I decided on Funbrain.com.  I chose this page because it looked like something a kid would be attracted to.  The homepage was colorful, organized, and visually appealing.  There were multiple different games focused on various school subjects, and beyond that they were customizable to a child's age and gender.  Another great feature I found about this website is that it is published under Pearson, which is an established educational company.

Other than what I enjoyed about the site itself, I also found the behind the behind the scenes aspects very interesting.  Previously I was never very concerned about programs like flashplayer etc unless I got a popup telling me I need to install something.  It always seemed like some mysterious technological secret that I was never sure about.  After this exercise I've learned ways to identify which programs are used and why.  I also now have a better idea of determining whether a website is trustworthy and current or not, which is very important as a student studying and writing papers.

about me / course expectations

My name is Allie Carey.  I have lived in Knoxville since I was born, even in the same house!  I went to Bearden Elementary, Webb Middle School, and West High School, where I graduated in 2009.  I am currently a senior at the University of Tennessee majoring in Psychology and minoring in Elementary Education.

I was accepted into the Teacher Licensure Program in December of 2011 (what a great Christmas present!). I will intern next year in an urban/multicultural school.  I want to teach elementary school because I want to help set up a strong foundation of learning for my students. These early years of school strongly affect a student's attitude and mindset about learning, and that attitude will carry on throughout their entire academic career. I hope to foster excitement and passion for learning in my students by making school fun and genuinely interesting.

Other than school I do a lot of babysitting for a family who goes to my church.  They have four young children who keep me very busy.  In my free time I love to be outside with my friends, boyfriend, and family.  I like to talk, read, attempt at cooking, go on walks, hike, and eat. I like to watch the Food Network, HGTV, the local news, and sometimes Bravo.

At first I was hesitant about this course.  I am a techno-fool and am slightly hesitant when it comes to things like blogs and websites.  I want to keep my classroom personal and engaging.  Originally I assumed that bringing in lots of technology would take away some of that personal atmosphere, but in the few classes we've had I have realized that resources like blogs, wikis, etc. allow for more communication and sharing, not less.  I am excited to learn about more creative ways to make my class a community that shares.
